How do i get away with the black smoky eye look? without looking like an emo?

ok so i LOVE LOVE LOVE this look but i cant seem to get it right. i know to keep everything else to a bare minimum to let my eyes stand out but i just cant do it. everytime i try with black eyeliner and black eyeshadow i end up looking like a black panda bear/ emo. how do i do this look properly? tips? im aiming for a look just like Ashleys (i have similiar hair and skin to her):

Put more black around the top of the eye and round mthe corners. Putting too much under the eye with make you look a bit zombified. Also smudge it to blend it in towards the skin.

here is my smokey eye...step by step and simple as can be... (feel free to substitute lighter shades for the ones i mention)

start with a thin layer of shadow base or eye primer (urban decay primer potion, mary kay eye primer, merle norman automatic shadow base, or mac eye primer)

black or dark grey shadow in the shape of a sideways V on the corner of the eye, working into the crease with a flat shadow brush (i use merle norman shadow in ebony and a palladio flat shadow brush)
