do they benefit an ecosystem in any way?

Yes. They are a vital part of mountainous bamboo forest environments. They thin the forest and help to keep it healthy, they carry ectoparasites that are part of the environment, they leave scat this is host to a variety of life forms, etc.

We cannot know all the ways they help their native environment, but take them away and certainly the environment will suffer.

Yes. The main food of a panda is bamboo. Without a panda in an area bamboo would be over populated and would cause problems in the ecosystem. That is how pandas benefit an ecosystem.
Thank you for the interesting question friend.

First of all, there are a few verifiable types of Panda Bears. The classic Black and White creature that so many people are amazed by, The Red and White Panda (which actually looks more like a puffy agile racoon) , different adapted variations of the Lesser Panda, etc.

These furry friends of the environment do their part to maintain a larger portion of the worlds living ecosystem by inhabiting mangrove forests in Asia, Nepal, Burma, India, Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, Laos... to name only a few.

Pandas are known to be intelligent solitary beasts and generally do not like to share range coverage with others. Within their alloted spaces, mostly Red Pandas; eat herbs, various insects, and small animals which they have been seen to kill and drag the corporal remains into heavy brush to bury and return to eat later.

Pandas are known the world over, to be major consumers of the plentifully preserved bamboo plants. This tall standing vegitational green diet gives the Panda Bear various nutrients, fiber and water, providing a rich source for methane and mulch once digested and returned to the ground by the consuption and natural defecation process.

I can relate to the insightful inquiry of your question since Pandas seem to just sit there, look cute and get chubby!... yet they are a crucial part of maintaining life and movement within various geographical sectors in this beautiful blue planet.
